Intro to Art

For our first art classes, we brainstormed what we already knew about art. Which words come to mind when you think about art? What types of art do you know about? Do you know the names of any artists?

Then we read "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. The biggest lesson from this wonderful book is to have confidence in art class. As one first grader said, "Don't try to be anyone else. Always be yourself!" Though something may be intimidating at first, it is important to try everything. There are no mistakes in art!

We spent the remainder of class coming up with a list of class rules. Students had a chance to choose their favorite rule and illustrate it.

"Always have fun"

"Be nice to your friends and their art"

"Keep  your area clean"

"Share the materials"

"Don't eat the materials"
