Today is the last day of our Native American Art unit, so we ended the unit with the same activity with which we began. We read the Native American folktale "How Fire Came to the Six Nations".
The story tells the tale of a young Iroquois boy named Three Arrows, who goes to a cave to fast and await a sign from the Great Spirit. While he is in the cave and fasting, a great storm arises, and he is visited by a vision of a Bear. The bear tells him that he will soon see something great that will help his people. Three Arrows looks outside the cave and sees two trees rubbing together until they burst into flames. The next morning, Three Arrows picks up two sticks and rubs them together, and in this way he brings fire to his tribe.
The 3rd and 4th graders listened to the folktale and drew their favorite scenes.
