Still Lives: Andy Warhol

Do Now: Imagine you are a famous singer. Design your CD cover.

As part of their 'Genres of Art' unit, the 3rd and 4th graders have been studying Still Lives. This week, they will be studying the varying still lives of Andy Warhol. Though Andy Warhol is perhaps better known for his colorful prints, he is a very talented illustrator as well. Some say that Warhol refused to use erasers while he sketched, preferring to start a drawing over rather than erase part of it.

Take a look at some of Warhol's sketches…

After taking a close look at Warhol's sketches, the 3rd and 4th graders tried their hand at Warhol-inspired still life sketches. Students observed a variety of objects (shoes, tape dispensers, staplers, spoons…) and had to make quick, simple sketches without erasing. Students were encouraged to draw the same object over and over until they felt satisfied with what they had made. They then chose which sketches they liked the best and made a small book.
